EVO: Engine Mechanicals. The Camshafts (4 of them) are used to operate the intake and exhaust valves by means of the lifters (AKA: tappets), the pushrods and the rocker arms. The #2 Cam is driven by the Pinion Gear. The Pinion Gear is mounted on the Pinion Shaft which is part of the Flywheel Assembly. #1 Cam - Rotates CW - Operates Rear.

The Sportster line dates back to 1957, but huge changes arrived in the 1986 model year, when the Ironhead engine was replaced by the new, alloy, Evolution engine, which ran cooler, quieter, and more reliably, and had hydraulic valves for reduced maintenance. That first year, you could get a Sportster in either 883 cc or 1,100 cc displacements.

Engine and Primary Oil System Modifications. Evo Crankcase Pressure and Engine Breathing. A mixture of crankcase air and oil mist is produced on each piston down stroke. This forced mixture helps to splash lube the moving parts in the engine. It also creates unwanted pressure in the engine. The oil mist is then separated from the crankcase air.

When the Sportster debuted, it closely resembled the K models in appearance, but the K model's 45 cubic-inch engine was replaced with a more powerful 54 cubic-inch, overhead-valve powerplant that was known as the ironhead motor because of the iron cylinder heads that were used.

Unlike most of today's motorcycle engines, the Sportster Evo uses just one cam per each overhead valve, resulting in four independent gear driven camshafts. This setup results in cam lobes that are in-line with each other, resulting in a parallel pushrod configuration.
